The following political concepts often come up in discussions of 1984:
Authoritarian—The government is
the authority. The individual obeys. This is the opposite of a libertarian
philosophy, in which the government leaves the individual alone as much as
possible.
Totalitarian—In totalitarian
rule, the government tries to control every aspect of the lives of its
citizens, including their thoughts and beliefs, by any means possible.
Oligarchical
Collectivism—Aristotle defines three types of government, each with a good form
in which the ruler or rulers have the good of the state in mind and a bad form
in which the rulers govern by self-interest.

Many of these government forms still exist in the world today. One example of a monarchy would be the U.K., ruled by Queen Elizabeth II. Oligarchies still exist in China, North Korea, and Venezuela. An example of tyranny would be Cuba, where the people have no say in the matters of government (education-portal.com). The U.S. is considered to be a democracy; however, a democracy in the U.S. today is different than how Aristotle viewed a democracy. Aristotle defined a democracy as rule by the people for individual self-interest, but the democracy in the U.S. is ruled by the people for the good of the country as a whole. This would be what Aristotle believes to be a polity or constitutional government.
Ryan:
These forms of government still exist, however, with much debate as to which is the best form of government due to the difference of opinion and views of success in a country. Many countries foster an authoritarian form of government while communist countries and dictatorships contain a totalitarian form. A monarchy is not as dominant, maybe not around anymore, as it was centuries ago. An aristocracy is more common with the educated leading, however a Democracy is the most common in present day. Democracy is in most developed countries, such as Western Europe and North America, while totalitarian or communist governments are in Russia, China and Africa and South America. The US has a Democracy and attempts to be the model of a democracy to other countries.

Most of these government forms still exist in our modern world; however, they are not necessarily limited by these definitions. China, as the West views it, is a totalitarian and communist government. China views itself as a Republic. North Korea is an example of a country that fits the definition of oligarchy to a “t.” It’s small group of leaders control most all of the resources and industries of the country. In the United Kingdom, the definition is a bit more loose. Their monarchy truly is little more than a formality. Though the Queen is highly regarded and has a say in many decisions of the country, the Parliament makes most of the decisions for the country, making it more along the lines of an aristocracy. The United States governs as a democracy, which it views as the most protective method, while still being minimally invasive.

In today’s society, we still have these forms of governments all around the world. The U.K. uses a monarchy, being ruled by Queen Elizabeth II. Very few countries still have an Aristocratic government, such as Austria, and Austria-Hungary. China is still using an Oligarchy form of government. Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Burma, North Korea and Zimbabwe all have a Tyranny government. My all time favorite form of government, mainly because I think it’s the easiest is a Democracy, and here in the U.S. we use that today,
which we all know as “rule by the people”.

In today’s society, we still see these forms of government prevailing in countries around the world. Monarchies are not as common as they were centuries ago. A monarchy is seen today in the United Kingdom, however most of the decisions taken are taken by the Parliament. China represents an oligarchy, where a small group of people control the decision-making process. Cuba represents a tyranny, where people have no say in the political ideas employed by the government. The central government is the supreme power in the state. The US is considered as a democracy, where people have a say in the political decisions made by the government.
